Anna Hunt Marsh a pioneer in the field of mental health in the US, established in Vermont the Brattleboro Retreat, the first independent private institution for the care of the mentally ill. Treatment methods emphasized fresh air, physical activity, educational enrichment, therapeutic farm and kitchen work, and supportive staff.
