The Italian physician Vincenzo Chiarugi, helps introduce humanitarian reforms in psychiatric hospitals, such as outlawing chains as a means of restraint for psychiatric patients. His advocacy for moral treatment was relatively overlooked until a gradual reassessment through the 20th century that now consider his work a landmark in the history of psychiatry.
